I did a search in Ancestry Library edition in the census with variations of that occupation in keyword with no specific names and toyed around with various birthdates with a 20yr margin to search in. I managed to find at least three, none of them matching the fisherman and his daughters, but it was certainly a fun diversion! Thanks for the question!

Yes, I believe?the three of you (David, Sandy & Mary Ann)?have found the answer - much as we suspected here. Leaves me wondering if the man's?occupation of?"fisherman"?was a related euphemism! Even with the river a mile or so distant, I find it hard to believe someone could have earned a living locally as a fisherman.... Definitely will be interesting to check further. Thank you for your help!

Hi everyone,

One of our regulars found an interesting occupation this morning in an 1860 census schedule. A man listed as a fisherman is enumerated with (possibly) his wife,?three?daughters and two sons all with the same surname. 



?



The two oldest (presumed)?daughters, ages 22 and 17, are listed as "Lady 'DuPave'" which is not listed in any of our dictionaries of old occupations and which I didn't find in a quick online search. Does anyone know what the census taker may have?meant? Dupave is in double quotation marks in the original.
