The Mining Your History Foundation, the Friends of the Library group for
the West Virginia Archives and History Library, will be having their
annual meeting and workshops in The Cultural Center, Charleston, WV, on
November 3, 2007. They would like to have a speaker/presenter on using
DNA for family history purposes, and one for funerary art (tombstones,
statues, flagholders, plaques, etc.). Regarding DNA, they would like
someone who can explain the science of it in layman's terms, how to go
about arranging for testing of family groups, how to find a reliable
lab, etc. I do not think they want a vendor of DNA services. I will be
directing them to a couple of Web sites that I already know about, but I
know the participants in this list have dealt with far more workshops
and speakers than I have, and I would like to take advantage of your
expertise.

Unless others express interest in the replies, please reply off-list to
susan.scouras at wvculture.org.

Thanks,
Susan

Susan,

Wayne Modlin, public library consultant at the Library
of Virginia, is very knowledgable about DNA and family
history, has testing experience, and has spoken about
it to at least one library group. You could contact

Hi Susan,

We found our genetic genealogy speaker on this website (the International Society of Genetic Genealogists):
http://www.isogg.org/.

Just click on the Speaker List and you'll see a list of speakers broken down by region.
Hope that helps!

Thanks,

Lesley

Sure! James Freed will be the speaker at our program. Unfortunately, his presentation at our library won't be until October 8th, and that may be too late to give you a review, depending on how soon you need to book someone. If it's not too late, I can certainly send you a review. Just let me know!

He did inform me that he has been doing presentations on this topic for about 5 years, and that he has recently presented at both the Mansfield, Ohio library and the Ohio Genealogical Society. His email address is jmfreed at midohio.net.

He is based in Delaware, OH. I'm not sure if he travels to your area, but if not, it looks like Harley Dakin covers West Virginia and his email is hpdakin at sbcglobal.net.

Good luck!

MessageI found it helpful, as we may need this type speaker in the Spring,
and though I am familar with the regular speakers bureau I had no idea
 there was one for DNA.
