[Genealib] My next question about periodicals

Dear List,

First, I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my questions about
how periodicals are shelved at their library (separately, or
integrated with the book collection, or some combination of
both). The upshot of the answers was that everyone is very happy
with the way that it is done in their library. A few libraries which
have integrated their periodicals in the past few years have noticed
an increase in the use of the periodicals; otherwise, it all
works. All of the responses were very helpful to me and I really
appreciate the time people took out of their busy schedules. The
subscribers to this list are a veritable fountain of library wisdom!

Now I have a new question about periodicals, and I'd especially like
to hear from libraries which receive less than 100 subscriptions
(paid or free). A small library might not be able to justify the
cost of an automated checkin system, so how do people check their issues in?

- If done manually, do you use a checkin card system? If so, what
kind of cards? Do you keep a template and print out new cards as
needed? Does anyone NOT keep their manual system in alphabetical
order by title, and if not why not, and how DO you keep your files?

- Does anyone use a spreadsheet for checkin purposes? If so, what
items do you designate columns of cells for, aside from the months of
the year? Do you code for method of acquisition - paid, gift,
exchange? Do you code for frequency? Anything else important?

- Do you check in newsletters which you might not intend to keep indefinitely?

- What have I forgotten to ask because I didn't know enough to ask it?

Thanks again. Feel free to respond directly to me if this is not of
interest to other list subscribers.
