Books withdrawn from the collection of our local public library are transferred to the Friends of the Library sale shop. The books are not marked "withdrawn" but the records are removed from the online catalog. I've purchased books at library book sales that still had the check-out card in the pocket.

Sadly, this is a pretty common practice. I've bought several books
in the last year from Internet sources where it turned out that the
book had been stolen from a library. I even bought a book from
England which arrived with the New England library card still intact
(no ex-lib markings etc.). It had been checked out in 2005. In that
case, it was a "reputable" book dealer who claimed to have bought it
in an estate sale. I returned the book to the library and reported
the case to AbeBooks but the library decided not to pursue the issue.?
?
With most user-to-user internet transactions (like craigslist in this
case), the paper trail is even thinner.?
?
("Robbery," by the way, is theft with the threat of violence. I was
relieved to find that the headline was wrong!).?
