1) your type of library - public? academic? genealogical/historical
> society? other?

--we are a public library

> 2) how your periodicals are shelved, and your opinion of it?

--in open areas, in a U-shape around outside walls of the main reading room.
These are the bigger and more popular ones. Small, single-family oriented
titles that we get as donations are cataloged, but are kept in s separate
storage area.

> 3) whether your library uses Dewey or LC, and whether you think this has
> any bearing?

---We use Dewey, but although the periodicals appear in the catalog, it is
by author and title, including holdings. There isn't a heading for, say, New
Hampshire - Genealogy for periodicals. (Although we have a couple of
volunteer docents who are working on such a thing for their own
illumination). We only have 1 cataloger left for the entire library system.

> 4) whether you have closed or open stacks, and whether this has any
> bearing?

--These are open stacks. They are that way because we have one person to
cover the entire second floor of a city block sized building.

> 5) (optional) If you had to start over from scratch, what would you do
> differently?

--Become a lawyer, doctor, etc. Seriously, it works pretty well the way that
it is and we are satisfied with this way of doing things. Patrons can
photocopy loose titles or recent (post 1930) bound titles. Earlier ones we
copy using a look-down copier.
