Re: G R E A T Responses to the inquiry Death and Birth Index by State
For a short while, I had the impression this was a long lost bonanza and an
aid for my research, but many of the links tested poorly when searching for US
Navy men lost during WWII.
It appears the US Navy Department, in concert with the National Archives
(NARA), has a strong belief that Dates and Places of Birth data on men who are
known to be deceased for more than 60 years is subjected to the threat of
"Identity Theft" or a "National Security Breech" in spite of the "Freedom of
Information Act." These government institutions have consistently denied or made it
virtually impossible for a researcher to gather this data.
Thanks to the families of the deceased and members in the genealogy community
for making data availble.
In my basic genealogy research, of more than 3,600 men, (Ref
http://www.subvetpaul.com/Diedwwii.htm )
I have names as well as data on WWII men that is missing in many State
records and monuments.
Also I have a considerable body of records, numbering in the hundreds, that
do not have Dates and Places of Birth or names of parents. Thus for this
sub-category of men, who died during WWII, a set of military records exists but
virtually no genealogy records. I call this, "The Men Who Died Twice." We know
where and when they were lost with their submarine however hundreds of these men
have no record of a Birth or Ancestry (Parents) - they were never born
(forgotten) in the genealogy records.
