West Virginia has an annual state death index on microfilm for 1917
through 1994, available only in the West Virginia Archives and History
Library. Copies of death certificates can be obtained through the
Archives for 1917 through 1973. On the Web site of West Virginia
Archives and History, actual images of state death certificates for 1917
through 1956 are available free online in a searchable database. In
January of each new year, another year is added--in January 2008, 1957
will go up. The project is called West Virginia Vital Research Records,
http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx.
Images of county death records from 1853 when births and deaths were
first kept (or from the inception of the county) up through the 1960's
and 70's are being added. Currently records of 16 counties are in or
being added to the database.
County birth and marriage records are included also. Birth records now
being added must be 100 years old or older. Marriages and deaths are
now required to be 50 years old or older. They don't plan to remove the
records outside the limit from the database, but will be following the
cutoffs for new counties added to the project.

I
I was wondering how many states have a death index? Washington State
has microfilm that lists by decade people who have died, when they died,
and where they died in the state. Does any other state have that? Becky
