Barbara,
We have a Genealogy Department in our Public Library. Our periodicals are intershelved with the books, following the Dewey Decimal System. This ensures that they will be grouped with books about the same geographic area, thus facilitating browsing. Our closed stacks are for rare and fragile volumes only; we do not keep periodicals there. We had the opportunity to change our setup when we moved into our new library in May but have been happy with this system. Our periodicals are cataloged, as well as being indexed in the PERSI available on our HeritageQuest subscription. Most of our periodicals are bound if we have a complete volume; otherwise the loose issues are in Princeton file boxes on the shelves.
I hope this is of some help to you.
