1) We  are a genealogical society library - small but still more than 7000 
catalog  entries, with each periodical run being only one entry
2) Periodicals are  shelved with books
3) We use the Dewey system - modified to catalog most  genealogical books and 
periodicals geographically and how to books somewhat by  subject
 

4) All  our materials are on open shelves
5) no - our library works well for those  that like to browse the shelves as 
well as those that use the catalog  first.
