Dear Collective Wisdom,
I spoke with a patron today who has a great-grandmother whose obituary
states that she was born in Bushton Mills, NY in the 1840s. I have
search French's and Spafford's New York gazetteers, the USGS Geographic
Names Information Server, and the Web, and the only information I found
was a 17th-century reference to a settlement of that name near Albany in
the 1770's.
I have also searched supposing that the name in the obit was misspelled
or otherwise corrupted, but the only other name seemingly close enough
was Brush's Mills (now Brushton) in Franklin Co., NY. This may be
correct, because the ggm's spouse apparently came from what is now St.
Lawrence Co. It is, however a long way from Albany.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.
