[Genealib] RE: Genealogy Bank

We have also trialed GB and we think it is a useful resource. We hope they will offer a reasonably priced institutional subscription someday. It appears they are banking on individual subscriptions to recoup investment. I have corresponded with others who have the same impression and who will not subscribe because of cost. Tom Kemp has put together a great collection. I wish them well. The commercial sites seem to be aiming at individual instead of institutional subscriptions, perhaps behind Ancestry's latest marketing strategy.

Other online sites are moving into the market, Footnote.com and WorldVitalRecords, that will begin to fill the gaps and provide needed resources, not to mention FamilySearch.org which is poised to begin deploying their new systems. Increased user collaboration at all sites should be very productive over the next few years. I see these changes ending up with a positive effect.

Hi Fern,
Patchogue had a month trial for this database. I loved it - then we spoke to the sales rep and got the subscription price. Until they drop their price, Patchogue will not be able to subscribe to it. Have they given you a price yet?

Linda,

If I can remember, I'll get my husband (I should learn how) to take a digital pic and send it to you.

Hello
Three years ago, I wrote an article for the APG Quarterly about the Archives of Americana library subscription material from Newsbank - from which GenealogyBank is derived, though in an exceptionally powerful, but simpler interface for the consumer market.

The 2004 article can be downloaded at
http://www.ancestralmanor.com/MP3/June2004APGQ_Sergeant.pdf

This January, we began doing teleconferences with an overview and several case studies about the GenealogyBank service.

I don't think we have scratched the surface on how many different types of problems this unique resource can be used for.

The teleconference handouts and one MP3 recording can be found below.

What is the GenealogyBank? Who is it for? When do you need it? Why is it a pathway to other records? How do you use it to bridge the gaps in your research?

Regarding the gentleman researching one ancestor in great detail:

I have been considering the gentleman's research woes for storage and organization. Here are a couple suggestions.

FamilySearch.org, and many other genealogy sites, have standard forms that can be used for research. I would highly suggest the gentleman create a timeline to correspond to his research. I find that it helps me to quickly put into perspective the data which I have acquired. It also helps me find the information quickly when I need to review or share information. Sort-of an index to a life.

It may sound archaic, but has he considered using a database such as the one offered for free at openoffice.org? By using one database for all of his information, he could sort the records by type (the colors of his index cards), by date, by record type, etc. Or, he could create multiple databases based on his current division of information on the colored cards. Then, he could import whichever information he wanted into one database. By creating his own databases, he will have a custom product at little to no cost.

I would also suggest that the gentleman scan his documents and upload to RootsWeb. He would then be able to enter the web address of his document into the database for easy reference. Doing this will help preserve his documents and prevent loss.

I would be happy to personally assist the gentleman if I can be of help.

      Linda et al,

We've been using spinners, like those for music CDs at Pleasanton Library for several years, and have had no problems like you've mentioned, though our collection of 500-600 taxes space, etc. I think binders are less convenient.
