The Delaunay Family
Jean Chevalier Delaunay remained in France during the last years of the 1700's, so as to take care of an aged aunt. In 1799 he received a poignant letter from his father, Robert Delaunay, who had settled in Philadelphia during the 1790's so as to get away from the turmoil in France during those years. Jean left France for Philadelphia after receiving the letter and took up residence there. After his marriage, he moved his family to New Orleans around 1820.
By 1835 he was established in Biloxi, where he rented out cottages and helped the illiterate with legal documents. His family has now been spread throughout the Gulf Coast. Most of his grandchildren were girls, and, it seems that today, only one or two boys carry the name so as to see it continued on the Coast.
Jean Delaunay died in his eighties in 1862. He is buried in the Biloxi cemetery. Interested individuals can find the complete history of this family by contacting Darnell Lepre in Biloxi at 228-396-2811.
