Can you stand one more Gretna Green (now that you have completed the list!). In the Chicago Daily News of August 30, 1901, there appeared an article wherein the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago demounced weddings in St. Joseph, Michigan. The priests called them "runaway" marriages. The article went on to say that the former Gretna Green was in Milwaukee, but was now in St. Joseph, Michigan.

I would have posted this back during the flurry of Gretna Green messages, but didn't discover it until just lately.

Well, my promise back in late March to compile the info from the list discussion has finally seen the light of day --- 13 pages! of background, hints, and states ...
And of course, there must be much more out there but at least this will give you a starting point when a patron comes in looking for the elusive place of marriage.

Please reply to me off list ... so I can simply hit "Reply" and attach.
Just say Gretna Greens on the Subject line.

THANKS to all who contributed ....
