[Genealib] Microfilm Scanners

We have 7 Canon 400 and one Canon 300. Two of the 400s and the one 300 are connected to computers which allows saving to various media as well as printing through the intranet to a central printer using a campus courtesy card purchased by the patron. We sell CDs, otherwise we don't charge for usage. Patrons can add money to the card when it runs out via a cash register in our department. We have five Canon 400s attached directly to individual printers with card swipes that charge their courtesy cards. We have three ST 200 Imagers attached to computers that also save digital images or print hard copy.

We have a microfilm scanner. It's attached to our in-house print network and people make prints using the coin-op machines. They can also create efiles which can be downloaded to disk. (We also sell clean disks for $1.00) We don't charge for downloading, since there's no actual product to recover cost on.

Hi, List:
If anyone has access to the following document, I would very much appreciate it if you would inform me off-list what it contains:
United States. Post Office Dept. /Index to Names, Aliases, and Histories of Postal Offenders/. Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1926.
I'm preparing a talk on the value of federal and state government documents in genealogical research.
Thanks,
Nancy

We do not have a microfilm scanner attached to a computer at this branch, but our other branch does. We do not charge to scan from the microfilm reader or from our regular scanners. We do sell CD-Rs and floppies for $1.00, and we charge $.10 for prints.

We have three microfilm scanners which we have set up with a coin op to print to a laser printer. We are considering retrofitting one of those scanners to scan to a computer. It is a Minolta MS6000. Do any of you have microfilm scanners which are hooked up to a computer for patron use? (self service) How do you recover your cost? Do you ask patrons to pay to make a scan?

We also have a scanner that scans microfilm to a computer, and we don't charge anything. It is not networked to a printer; patrons can scan and then save the digital image to a floppy disk or to a USB device. The computer also has internet access so patrons can email images to themselves (or so I can email images to patrons.)

Free for the taking:
1. Index to the Journal of the Magoffin County Historical Society, March 1979 to Spring 1996.
2. Our Gastineau Family by Loyd D. Gastineau, third edition, 1994
3. Our Gastineau Family by Flossie Gastineau Oaks, 1973 (appears to be an earlier edition to the one by Loyd Gastineau).
The Gastineau books appear to cover a French-Canadian-American family. The counties that seem to be mentioned most often are Greene County, Indiana, and Pulaski County, Kentucky.
The Index and Gastineau III are in very good condition. The 1973 Gastineau book is rusty (where there were staples and paper clips) and has some foxing. It also has a three page supplement stuck in the back. With this donation we also received about 20 loose pages of Gastineau information. We are keeping the loose sheets, but would gladly copy them for anyone interested in them.

I just wanted to pass on this press release. Even if you don't
service the Oakland County, Michigan area you might want to keep
the website and database in mind should you have a patron trying
to research that area.
*******************************************************************************
To be distributed to library and genealogy lists.
For all Libraries, Genealogy and Historical Societies serving
Oakland County Michigan
Oakland County Historical Resources (OCHR) invites libraries,
genealogy and historical societies to join us in building a
central resource for Oakland County genealogical and local
history information.
Have you ever wished there was a comprehensive online site where
you could go to find information on Oakland County people or
history?
In 2003 a consortium of Oakland County librarians, historical
society representatives and individuals interested in genealogy
met to discuss issues and the trend to digitize and make
collections available via the Internet. OCHR was established, a
plan was developed and an LSTA grant proposal was written to
obtain funds for the needed technological resources.
The plan included creating an Internet index to Oakland County
resources, a âEURoefull-textâEUR searchable database of documents and
images, and catalog for identifying and locating print materials.
OCHR has adopted the Oakland County web page of the American
Local History Network to serve as the central index and
distribution point for the groupâEUR(tm)s products and activities.
Here you can find a comprehensive and dynamic listing of services
offered by organizations across Oakland County and the State of
Michigan. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mi/county/oakland1/
On November 1, 2006, OCHR will release its most ambitious project
to date. The http://OaklandCountyHistory.org database provides
unlimited potential to search all kinds of resources including
some previously inaccessible. Newspapers, cemetery records, voter
records, scrapbooks, ephemera, obituaries, assessment rolls,
maps, atlases, photographs, headstone photos and more will be
accessible through keyword searches as well as subject browsing.
Several levels of membership opportunities are available. Full
membership includes governing and voting privileges and unlimited
record uploads for an annual fee of $1,000. Other levels of
membership are available for lower annual costs. All fees are
subject to change annually.
Current members are: Bloomfield Township Library, Farmington
Community Library, Independence Township Library, Oakland County
Genealogical Society, Oakland County Pioneer & Historical
Society, Oakland County Research Library, Orion Township Public
Library, PastWays, Rochester Hills Museum Van Hoosen, Rochester
Hills Public Library, and Waterford Township Public Library.
