I just wanted to pass on this press release. Even if you don't
service the Oakland County, Michigan area you might want to keep
the website and database in mind should you have a patron trying
to research that area.

To be distributed to library and genealogy lists.
For all Libraries, Genealogy and Historical Societies serving
Oakland County Michigan
Oakland County Historical Resources (OCHR) invites libraries,
genealogy and historical societies to join us in building a
central resource for Oakland County genealogical and local
history information.
Have you ever wished there was a comprehensive online site where
you could go to find information on Oakland County people or
history?
In 2003 a consortium of Oakland County librarians, historical
society representatives and individuals interested in genealogy
met to discuss issues and the trend to digitize and make
collections available via the Internet. OCHR was established, a
plan was developed and an LSTA grant proposal was written to
obtain funds for the needed technological resources.
The plan included creating an Internet index to Oakland County
resources, a “full-text” searchable database of documents and
images, and catalog for identifying and locating print materials.
OCHR has adopted the Oakland County web page of the American
Local History Network to serve as the central index and
distribution point for the group’s products and activities.
Here you can find a comprehensive and dynamic listing of services
offered by organizations across Oakland County and the State of
Michigan. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mi/county/oakland1/
On November 1, 2006, OCHR will release its most ambitious project
to date. The http://OaklandCountyHistory.org database provides
unlimited potential to search all kinds of resources including
some previously inaccessible. Newspapers, cemetery records, voter
records, scrapbooks, ephemera, obituaries, assessment rolls,
maps, atlases, photographs, headstone photos and more will be
accessible through keyword searches as well as subject browsing.
Several levels of membership opportunities are available. Full
membership includes governing and voting privileges and unlimited
record uploads for an annual fee of $1,000. Other levels of
membership are available for lower annual costs. All fees are
subject to change annually.
Current members are: Bloomfield Township Library, Farmington
Community Library, Independence Township Library, Oakland County
Genealogical Society, Oakland County Pioneer & Historical
Society, Oakland County Research Library, Orion Township Public
Library, PastWays, Rochester Hills Museum Van Hoosen, Rochester
Hills Public Library, and Waterford Township Public Library.
