Karen
Are you sure its not "is't" instead of "ms't". Instant or "is't" means referring to a previous letter, the writer is stating that the 20th instant is the same month as a previous letter in question written in a certain month.
Hope this helps.

  Subject: [Genealib] Abbreviation "ms't"

We have a copy of a transcript of a letter dated 27th July, 1883 written by a United States Consular Agent. Throughout the letter is the abbreviation "ms't." It is always preceded by a number, indicating a date (e.g. .on the 20th ms't.). Does anyone know what this "ms't" means? We would appreciate any help or information.

  Thank you.
