  Carol,

We treat them like our other Special reference material. We don't checkthem out. We treat them like other reference materials patrons use them in the library.

                                                                    Ella Ann Hatfield
                                                                    Citizens Library
                                                                     Washington, PA

Are we the only library that checks these CDs out to patrons? We keep them in cases like the music CDs, use security strips that are removed at checkout, and let them keep them up to 3 weeks. They are very popular!

Bob:

Therein lies the problem! Many producers/vendors won't let libraries
put their CDs on a network. If they all did, I'm sure that CD usage
would increase dramatically.

Anything that makes it easy on the user and provider is sure to generate
kinder words and higher usage statistics.

List:

I was asked to post the answers to my query about who was buying CDs and
what factored into the decision to buy:

1. CD is the only format the info comes in. Also, they have an IT
person from the city who's accommodating to genealogists.

2. CD budget has been discontinued due to non-use.

3. Had no usage for over a year until she gave a talk. Now usage is up
and she buys only CD-ROMs. Marketing is key. Let people know what you
have and how it can help them.

Thanks to all who replied.
