Do not know the total file size of your 300 DVD collection but we use
removable 160 GB hard disks for disaster recovery, security, or server
problems. At days end we just unlatch the disk drive(s) from the front of
the computer and secure them in a fireproof locked location. We also
store duplicate disk drives offsite in case of natural disaster. If the
server goes down or a natural disaster warning is issued we just remove
the disk drives from the computers and they are taken to a safe location
by a designated disaster recovery staff member. If the disks are damaged
we obtain our duplicates from our offsite location (in another state) and
just reinsert them and we are back up running with full functionality. The
disk drives are relative inexpensive.
We test this process once a month. Our library has never been down except
for power outages and we are working on providing emergency generators for
this occurrence.

[Genealib] DVD Carrying Case for emergency situation
I am preparing for a fast exit from our building in case of an emergency.
(Darn hurricane season is here again!)
I need a case that will hold my entire DVD collection, which is over 300.
I would like it to be very secure, fireproof if possible and easy to
carry. I would like each DVD to be in its own pocket. These DVD?s hold all
of our local history material that has been digitized, scanned and video
taped.
This may be asking for too much, but I feel this is important in case our
computers get damaged. I have a backup on my hard drive as well as on the
server. The hard drive can be unplugged and carried out too. But, I want
the DVD?s to be another backup away from the library and in a safe place.
Any suggestions for a case, box or? Your suggestions as always is very
much appreciated.
