[Genealib] rates of genealogy workshop

Elaine, thanks for sharing that; I had not read it before.
I think my point is still that whatever you pay (and certainly the society's ability is part of it; perhaps take up an extra 'offering') don't have such as wide range as $50 vs. $200 when the lecturers may be much more equal than that in their experience, speaking ability, etc. Pull the top one down a notch and up the other one somewhat.
But of course, the thing 'newbies' should remember is that by speaking locally they are getting that much needed experience in order to hone their skills.

While looking for something else I ran across this discussion of Genealogy speaker fees at Ken Aitken's genealogy blog at http://genealogyeducation.wordpress.com/2006/03/01/speaker-fees/ It discusses the logic behind how you set your fees and gives several examples about what others are charging.

The Georgia Genealogical Society usually pays professional and
nationally known speakers $200 per lecture which are usually an hour or
so. They usually give 4 lectures in the day they are here. We cover
the hotel and airfare, but they have to make the flight arrangements way
in advance. We make the copies of the handouts to help control those
costs. Our program meetings are 4 times a year and for 2 of those we
bring in such speakers. We usually pay non-professional local (meaning
  Georgia) speakers $50 per lecture.

For the December meeting, which is elections and annual meeting, we have
had the last few years a local professional who does one program for
about an hour and that rate has been $200.
