[Genealib] rates of genealogy workshop

You won't mind if I take issue here, will you?
The "non-professional local" speakers getting only $50 vs. $200 is out of
line, in my opinion. Do you think it takes less time for them to prepare a
really good lecture? Nope! The workman is worthy of his hire ....
regardless of if that speaker is out of town or in. Those in town have
probably spent the same amount of $$ on books, conferences, membership
fees, etc. so they can be a better speaker. Let's not short them ...
The things a Society should think about is not only the speaker fee and
expenses but also remember the time they spend on the road getting there
and back ... add those hours to the hours spent in preparation and the
hours of speaking ... I wonder if you add it all up if they receive minimum
wage?
It just might be that your 'local speaker' is a better one than the one you
bring from out of town or out of state.
What you can save on is lodging and mileage - maybe. If I'm speaking in
town, then the group can save the mileage and a hotel room - but not the
speaking fee (except in the case where I'm a member of the Society; then it
becomes token fee). And, of course, if I'm asked to speak in town I'll be
glad to do one lecture, but if I'm going out of town that requires an
overnight, then I ask for the full day ...
Local (in town) vs. fifty miles or more. Mileage per the state mileage
rate is charged if I go fifty miles or more.
http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/texastra.html This gives not only
mileage calculation but hotel and meal reimbursement.
